Entrepreneurship: Setting the Path to Freedom

 In Uncategorized

entrepreneurThey say the path to freedom and self sustenance is getting a fancy college degree, earning a big enough bank balance and retiring early at the ripe age of 55. While it seems very tempting to work like a hog for more than 5 decades to spend the end of our lives in comfort, I would rather choose something that allows me to make my own decisions, not be answerable to anyone and be happier.

But Josh, There’s nothing that can allow you To Be Completely Free!

You are right, there isn’t. Even in this day and age, we are bound by the higher powers known as banks and bosses. When you buy a house or a new car, you obviously don’t have the cash to for it upfront, so you naturally get a loan from your friendly neighborhood bank. Congratulations, your life is now the collateral for the bank, as they can take your house, car and pretty much everything else if you fail to return the payment. Tough luck!

Even for those that are doing well in a high paying job and don’t need the help of a creditor, they are still bound by an upper level figure or a boss. In fact, just 28% of those employed in the US report that they are satisfied with their jobs, meaning the overwhelming 72% are just sitting ducks.

So coming back to my original dilemma, what is it that will help me support myself without being answerable to anyone?

The Answer: Entrepreneurship

In a survey of more than 3000 Americans that was taken last year, they were asked why they dream of entrepreneurship and self-employment. An overwhelming 87 percent related entrepreneurship to personal independence as well as flexible work timings. Just fewer than 10% said they would prefer the entrepreneurial road for better pay.

It all makes sense; after all, entrepreneurs do earn less than those working for others, work for longer hours and think of work even when they aren’t at work. All this may paint a bad picture, but here’s the kicker; entrepreneurs report a much higher satisfaction level than those that are employed. What this means is that those hired by a business are given more pay while working less, yet they aren’t as satisfied professionally as entrepreneurs.

When you think about it, the satisfaction one gets from seeing his business flourish is really something else. Remember those Lego bricks we had when we were kids? How amazing it was to see a complete figure made out of those small bricks, to see your idea coming into form.

Now don’t get me wrong; entrepreneurship isn’t some magic pill that automatically gives you a better quality of life; it simply depends on what you aim for in life. Do you see yourself controlling your own life? Do you like to make decisions yourself rather than asking every other Tom, Dick and Harry for advice? If so, the entrepreneurial road is for you.
